Sports and Braces

Updated: Jan 10, 2019

You already know your child needs to see an orthodontist. There are some crooked teeth and an obvious overbite. At the same time, you realize your child is very involved in sports. Can your child wear braces and still actively participate in these activities?

In years past, the answer to this question would have been a resounding "no." Times have changed, though. Mouth guards designed to be worn with braces have been developed. These protective devices help shield the braces, teeth, and orthodontic 'hardware' from a blow to the mouth. They are a must if your child is involved in any sports -- contact or otherwise. That being said, most orthodontists would agree that certain sports, like boxing or wrestling should be avoided even with the use of sports-guard. There's just too great a danger of trauma to the mouth.

Most parents are pleasantly surprised to find that braces do not greatly affect their child's normal activities. Yes, there are adjustments to be made in the areas of diet and proper care of braces. But, the results are well worth it.
